Taking Magnesium? The Number on the Front Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story.

Taking Magnesium? The Number on the Front Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story.

When choosing a magnesium supplement, do you look for the biggest number on the bottle?

Here’s what matters: the weight of the magnesium compound is different from the amount of elemental magnesium it provides.

For example, a supplement containing 500 mg of magnesium glycinate does not necessarily provide 500 mg of magnesium. The actual magnesium content—the elemental magnesium—is only a portion of that weight.

Magnesium supports several essential functions, including:

* Normal muscle and nerve function
* Energy production
* Bone health
* Protein synthesis

Before choosing your supplement, check:

✅ The form: Is it glycinate, citrate, oxide or another form?
✅ The elemental magnesium: How much actual magnesium does each serving provide?
✅ The serving size: Does the stated amount come from one capsule or several?
✅ Your tolerance: Does it cause loose stools or stomach discomfort?

Start with magnesium-rich foods such as nuts, seeds, dals, whole grains and leafy vegetables. Supplements can help fill a dietary gap when needed.

Choose your magnesium by understanding the label—not just the biggest number.

If you have kidney disease or take regular medicines, speak to your healthcare professional before supplementing.
